Assistant Estimator

EQUANS are recruiting for an Assistant Estimator to be based in Manchester. This is a permanent full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.

General Overview

To work with the Senior Estimator to establish an accurate cost of a variety of tender bids prior to adjudication within the region of £500,000.00 - £3,000,000.00.

To understand, implement and adhere to the company SHEQ policy/strategy.

The post holder must be qualified or working to HNC/HND/Degree level in Building / Quantity Surveying. Some experience within Construction Estimating or Quantity surveying would be advantageous, but this is not a requisite and training will be provided to bring the post holder up to the required standard for this role.

The post holder will be expected to have a sound understanding of general construction methods and be able to read and understand drawings and specifications.

The role will involve working in the following sectors: Refurbishment, Capital Works, Education & Public Buildings and Decarbonisation 

Key Accountabilities

  • Take ownership of tender, reading through & understanding the tender documents
  • Allocate sub-contract packages and send out to the market for competitive pricing
  • Visit sites undertaking measures and assessing tender issues i.e. access
  • To ensure subcontract quotations have been collated and checked for compliance prior to use
  • Compile sub-contractor comparisons and ensure all back up quotes are uploaded to Sharepoint
  • To price the remaining elements of any scheme using current competitive rates
  • To ensure all tender documentation has been collated in sufficient time for the adjudication to be undertaken
  • To amend pricing element of tender documentation as agreed during the tender review and submit tender by due date and time
  • To ensure that supporting tender documentation has been completed correctly and returning with priced tender documentation by due date and time
  • To ensure a non-confrontational approach with any Internal and external clients at any time
  • To ensure discipline and professional standards are maintained
  • To comply with the competition law compliance guidelines
  • Ensure that you are cognizant of associated risks applicable in carrying out your role and the proper measures are adopted to manage, control and minimize any risks which may apply to your daily duties
  • Comply with the terms and conditions detailed within the employees handbook
  • Ensure that all staff comply with the operating procedures of the Estimating Department
  • Look to develop good working relationships with manufacturers, suppliers etc and generate new business opportunities for the company
  • To ensure all tender documentation has been completed and uploaded to Sharepoint
  • Any other reasonable management request.

Trainee Estimator

Equans is looking for a Trainee Estimator to join our team in Nottingham on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.

General Overview

To provide support to the estimating team to establish an accurate cost of a tender bid prior to adjudication. We will work with you to show you & explain everything you need to know from start to finish, you will shadow tradesmen on site to understand what they do, the problems (& solutions) the face on site, you will meet the delivery & commercial teams, again, working with them to fully understand their roles & how your estimating decision that you will learn, impact on what they do.

What will you deliver?

  • To attend tender adjudications once they have been arranged with the correct time frame sufficient notice.
  • To ensure tender abstracts are reviewed, completed correctly and agree sub-contractors to be used for any given scheme with the operations departments – all to be done with the estimating team.
  • To ensure that supporting tender documentation has been completed correctly and returning with priced tender documentation by due date and time – working with the estimating team.

General Overview

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is responsible for leading all commercial, financial, and contractual aspects of multiple or high-value projects. This senior role focuses on maximising profitability, ensuring comprehensive legal and contractual compliance, and proactively managing all commercial issues. The Senior Quantity Surveyor is also tasked with overseeing the completion of applications and valuations in line with contract terms, ensuring prompt payments to subcontractors, and aligning all activities with the company's SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) policy and strategy. In this capacity, the Senior QS plays a pivotal role in guiding the commercial strategy and ensuring successful project delivery from a financial and contractual perspective.

Take responsibility for financial performance, providing strategic insights to maximise profitability.
  • Contract Administration: Lead the administration of contracts, including the preparation, negotiation, and finalisation of contract variations. Ensure that all contractual obligations are met, and that legal risks are minimised through robust contract management.
  • Procurement and Tendering: Supervise the procurement process, ensuring the preparation of comprehensive tender documents, careful evaluation of bids, and selection of subcontractors and suppliers. Ensure procurement activities deliver the best value and align with the company’s commercial strategy.
  • Cost Valuation and Reporting: Conduct and oversee regular valuations of work completed, manage payments to subcontractors, and prepare final accounts. Oversee profitability reporting for projects, ensuring the accuracy and robustness of financial reporting (CVRs/WCT) in collaboration with the commercial and operational teams, identifying all risks and opportunities.
  • Risk Management: Take a lead role in identifying, assessing, and managing financial and contractual risks. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks, ensuring the company's interests are safeguarded at all times.

Electrical Estimator

Equans is a renowned energies & services contractor and a proud member of the Bouygues global industrial group. Our expertise spans the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and critical infrastructure worldwide.

Equans has a great opportunity for an experienced M&E Estimator who has worked either within the LED street lighting or highways infrastructure sector. This is a pivotal role in our aim to expand within the street lighting and highways sector. 

The role itself can be based from Manchester, Middlesborough, Welwyn Garden City, London Waterloo or Sittingbourne offices and potentially home based. 

Key activities

  • To prepare and compile large/complex quotations and maintenance tenders for submission to clients.
  • Receipt of client enquiries and establishment of suitability within the business. Creation of CRM record, review of the scope and circulation to relevant operational division.  
  • Liaison with senior management to develop the Bid Strategy and request support to produce programmes, risk/compliance matrices and quality submissions as dictated by the enquiry. Visit site if required. Engage with Procurement team where necessary.
  • Prepare Bills of Quantity from drawing take off (where required) and raise technical queries with the client, where appropriate.
  • Liaise with the operational team to assess labour and fleet resource required and cost using up to date rates. Agree productivities and works duration, including preliminary items.
  • Update CRM record on submission and track progress with client. Ensure the relevant divisional team management are kept up to date with any developments.    
  • Assist procurement with compiling the material approval package for submission to client.

Skills, qualifications & experience

  • Previous experience in an Estimating role within street lighting or highways
  • Preferably from an Electrical Engineering background with Engineering qualifications (degree/HND etc.), other disciplines may be considered such as Instrumentation & Control, Civil, Process Engineering etc.
  • Experience of a wide range of tender types/sizes in the Highways (Road Lighting & Motorway Communications) / M&E / Utilities sectors.
  • Experience of supporting multiple tenders simultaneously
  • Ability to identify and price risks & opportunities
  • Diplomatic communicator, with excellent relationship building skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and cross functionally
  • Comfortable visiting sites including highways and substations 
  • Degree/HNC in construction related subject, or qualified by experience
  • NEC and MF1 forms of contract experience
  • Able to produce simple programmes to evaluate preliminaries and phasing of work, and understand from a client/main contractor

General Overview

To assist the Commercial Manager with effective financial management during pre-commencement stage in order to reduce risk and increase target contribution prior to commencement on site.

To play a fundamental role within the site team to ensure the efficient delivery of each scheme. It is also essential that the SQS undertakes financial management and accurate reportage, in accordance with company procedures.

To assist the CM in financial pre-commencement activities such as pricing of works for submission to client, appointment of consultants, initial subcontract negotiations.

To carry out key commercial tasks such as bonus payments, subcontract procurement and management, site measurement, internal and external valuations, Management of change orders, Cost Value reportage, Performance Reviews – all in accordance with the Quantity Surveyors Manual and Training Plan.

Rebate reportage

  • Ensure PSL is reviewed prior to subcontract procurement and that subcontract orders are placed in line with supply chain agreements.
  • Completion of rebate reporting on a monthly basis and submitted to Rebate Champion.

Operative bonus payments

  • Obtain weekly bonus sheets from directly employed operative.
  • Check against Site Manager’s weekly time sheet.
  • Apply pre-agreed bonus targets.
  • Administration of payments.

 

Monthly cost value reports

  • Completion of initial internal value split within cost value report to determine value within each discipline.
  • Completion of cost projection for duration of scheme across all elements to establish projected final cost.
  • Produce accurate cost information for monthly Cost Value Report.
  • Completion of Cost Value Report by inputting accurate costs.
  • Updating internal value in line with most recent projected final account.
  • Updating projected cost for the duration of scheme.
  • Ensure Subcontract and Material liabilities are input accurately.
  • Completion of Contribution Action Plan.
  • Ensure cash position updated accurately.
  • Attend budget meetings with site team.
  • Production of performance review document for senior management.
  • Present current Cost Value Report to senior management during performance review.

Management of change orders/variation accounts

  • Accurately record occurrence of any change orders; whether client or contractor led.
  • Pricing of change order to establish cost and value.
  • Production of early warning notice / change order for submission to client.
  • Update Cost Value Report ensuring both cost and value are updated prior to monthly report.
  • Update projected final account to be submitted to client with monthly valuation claim.
  • Value engineering process to ensure best value for client and to maximise internal contribution.

External valuations

  • Produce accurate information from site measures and subcontract accounts to enable the completion of the monthly external valuations.
  • Produce accurate information on change orders to enable the completion of monthly external valuations.
  • Production of external valuation; ensuring cash position is maximised.
  • Update projected final account to be submitted to client with monthly valuation claim.
  • Update cash flow to be submitted to client with monthly valuation claim.
  • Ensure interim certificate is obtained in line with contractual timeframes.

Internal valuations

Quantity Surveyor

EQUANS is looking for a Quantity Surveyor to join our refurbishment team, this is a full time permanent role.  Our head office base is Hatfield however this role will be working on sites in  Harringay or Richmond. We offer is a competitive salary, company vehicle or allowance and benefits package. 

This role is to work as part of our refurbishment team on social housing properties, you will be working on internal and external works. You will be responsible for managing your own jobs working on projects of circa 11 million.

 

What will you deliver? 

    • Management and control of subcontract orders, accounts and variation accounts in line with the main contract and sub-contract data base
    • Post-tender internal and external pricing analysis/assessment for sign-off whilst ensuring within budget
    • Conduct contract risk and opportunity assessment to identify these areas and plan for them accordingly to ensure pricing remains on budget without undermining Health and Safety.
    • Manage subcontractor and professional services selection for new schemes, ensure the chosen contractor has the appropriate order and information to carry out their work, and helping to prepare procurement schedules liaising with legal counsel as required regarding contractual information (collateral warranties, PCG’s, etc)
    • Completing a monthly cost / valuation report and cash flow for the designated projects.
    • Commercial reporting / CVRs completed independently to be submitted for MQS approval
    • Logical and auditable preparation of relevant documentation for valuation, procurement and commercial administration

Who are we looking for? 

 

  • Relevant QS experience running your own jobs
  • Social housing and refurbishment experience
  • Experience working for a main contractor
  • Experience with excellent influencing and negotiation skills with the supply chain and/or external clients to ensure the business maximises profit throughout contract schemes
  • Excellent level of numeracy and verbal communication skills
  • IT skills
  • Full clean UK driving license
